Chapter 7
Taming the Beacon
Using his resourcefulness, Deagan devises a method to safely modulate the beacon's energy output. He works against time to prevent further damage to Saturn's rings.
Deagan’s breath hitched, a silent gasp swallowed by the hum of his ship’s life support. He’d seen wonders, of course. He’d danced with nebulae and navigated asteroid fields that glittered like spilled diamonds, but this… this was something else. The rings of Saturn, his old, familiar friends, were alive. Not with the gentle, predictable ballet of ice and rock he knew, but with a vibrant, almost frantic energy. Waves of light, the color of a dawn sky just before the sun breaks, pulsed through them, distorting the familiar, serene bands into something wild and unpredictable. The visual feed on his main console flickered, struggling to keep up with the erratic energy signatures. Alarms, soft and insistent, chirped a warning he’d learned to trust.
“Alright, old girl,” he murmured to the humming ship, his voice a low rumble of concentration. “Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Just… measure.” He tapped a sequence on his console, his fingers moving with a practiced grace born of countless hours spent coaxing data from recalcitrant systems. The ship responded, its sensors reaching out, tasting the strange energies. The readings were… baffling. Off the charts, yes, but also intricately patterned, like a language he almost, *almost* understood. It wasn’t chaotic, not truly. It was… purposeful.
He steered the ship closer, the icy debris of the rings looming large in the viewport. Usually, they were a familiar, comforting presence, a silent testament to cosmic forces. Now, they seemed agitated, each shard vibrating with an unseen power. He saw it then, a glint of something that didn’t belong. It was nestled deep within a particularly dense band of ice, larger than any stray moonlet, yet smaller than the planet itself. It was an artifact, ancient and undeniably alien, pulsing with the same ethereal light that now painted the rings. It was the heart of the storm, the source of the whispers that had drawn him across the vast emptiness.
