Amara watched, her heart a heavy stone in her chest, as the fissures in the nation widened. She saw it in the weary eyes of her neighbours, in the hushed conversations that ceased the moment a uniformed figure passed by, in the way children’s laughter seemed to shrink, afraid of attracting unwanted attention. The Architect’s pronouncements, broadcast across the nation, were meant to inspire, but they landed like pronouncements of doom for those who remembered a different Uganda, a Uganda where voices were not silenced, but amplified.
