The sun, a relentless eye in the bleached sky, beat down on Jonas as he trudged along the dusty track. His feet, calloused and weary, kicked up puffs of earth that seemed to mock his quest. Mwanza felt a lifetime away, a shimmering mirage in the heat haze. He clutched the small, worn pouch containing the few seeds he’d managed to salvage, each one a prayer for a future he could barely envision. The memory of his village, once vibrant with the hum of life, now echoed with the hollow lament of the encroaching desert. He saw again the cracked earth, the skeletal trees, the despair etched onto the faces of his kin. It was a sight that fueled his resolve, a burning ember in the vast emptiness.

Suddenly, a figure emerged from the shimmering distance, a splash of color against the monochrome landscape. It was a young boy, his bare feet kicking up dust with surprising speed. As he drew closer, Jonas recognized him as Leo, a swift messenger from a neighboring settlement, a place Amina, the wise elder, called home. Leo’s eyes, bright and earnest, met Jonas’s.

“Jonas! A message for you!” Leo panted, thrusting a tightly rolled piece of parchment into his hand. The paper, brittle and yellowed, felt ancient, like a forgotten whisper from the past.
