The air in Mwanza tasted different. Thicker, somehow, laced with a faint, metallic tang that Jonas couldn't quite place. It wasn’t the clean, dry bite of the encroaching desert he’d left behind, nor the familiar scent of damp earth after a rare rain. This was a scent of power, of something unnatural. He’d walked for days, the sun a relentless eye in the bleached sky, his worn sandals kicking up dust that shimmered with heat. The landscape, though still parched, showed pockets of an almost aggressive green, a stark contrast to the brittle, straw-colored fields he’d seen for so long. These were the mwanza ground plots, whispered about in hushed tones, the source of both envy and fear.

He crested a small rise, his eyes scanning the horizon, searching for… he wasn’t entirely sure. A sign, perhaps. A place where the prophecy might begin to unfold. Below him, a cluster of huts huddled together, their thatched roofs looking tired and faded. But it was the fields that drew his gaze. Vast swathes of land, meticulously cultivated, pulsed with a vibrant, almost unnatural green. Tomatoes, plump and ruby-red, hung heavy on their vines. Maize stalks stood tall and proud, their tassels a golden promise. It was a vision of abundance, a mirage in the encroaching wasteland. Yet, as he drew closer, a disquiet settled in his gut. The vibrant green seemed to drink the very light from the sky, leaving the surrounding earth a duller, more muted hue.

A figure emerged from one of the huts, his movements fluid, almost regal. He was a man of imposing stature, his skin the color of polished ebony, his robes a deep, rich indigo that seemed to absorb the sunlight. A silver amulet, shaped like a coiled serpent, gleamed at his throat. There was an aura about him, a magnetic pull that drew the eye. Jonas recognized him from the hushed descriptions he’d overheard on the road: Baraka, the landlord.
