A Test of Faith
Silas's men raid the temple outskirts, seeking to capture James. Anna stands firm, protecting him and challenging the hunters' prejudice. Her bravery inspires James.
The air in the temple courtyard, usually so still and serene, vibrated with a sudden, raw terror. It was the kind of fear that clawed at your throat, that made the hairs on your arms stand on end. I’d felt it before, in the deepest, darkest corners of my own mind, but this was different. This was external, a palpable wave crashing against the stone walls that had become my fragile sanctuary. Shouts, harsh and guttural, echoed from beyond the outer perimeter, a stark contrast to the hushed sanctity I’d grown accustomed to.
Anna was beside me in an instant, her hand finding mine, a steadying anchor in the rising tide of panic. Her eyes, usually so full of gentle understanding, were now sharp, scanning the periphery, a flicker of defiance hardening their depths. "Silas," she breathed, the name a venomous whisper.
My own heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat of dread and a grim, familiar resignation. Silas. The name itself was a curse, a promise of pain and persecution. His men, the hunters, were here. And they were looking for me.
