Beneath the Surface
James experiences a surge of protective instinct towards Anna. He grapples with his werewolf nature, realizing it can be a shield as well as a curse. His feelings for her grow more intense.
The scent of frost-kissed pine and damp earth was usually a comfort, a familiar blanket against the gnawing emptiness that often settled in my gut. But tonight, it was a sharp, almost acrid smell, tinged with something metallic and wrong. It prickled the hairs on my arms, a primal alarm bell that had nothing to do with the moon’s phase. Anna. The thought was a jolt, an electric current that shot through me, overriding the usual unease of my own existence. She was out there, somewhere in the encroaching darkness, and a sudden, fierce protectiveness, raw and unbidden, surged through my veins. It was a feeling so potent it almost made me forget the beast coiled within me, the one that craved only solitude and the shadows.
I found her near the edge of the woods, where the ancient oaks gave way to a more open, windswept clearing. She was silhouetted against the faint glow of the distant moon, her head tilted, listening. A shiver traced its way down my spine, not from the cold, but from the sheer vulnerability of her posture. She was so small, so fragile, and the world outside the temple’s walls was a brutal, unforgiving place. Especially for someone like me, or the kind of darkness I carried within.
“Anna?” My voice, rougher than I intended, cut through the stillness.
