The air in the sanctuary had grown heavy, not with the usual scent of incense and old stone, but with a prickle of unease that had settled deep into my bones. It had been weeks since I’d found refuge within these hallowed walls, weeks of Anna’s gentle presence slowly chipping away at the ice that had encased my heart. Each sunrise was a victory, each shared meal a quiet affirmation that perhaps, just perhaps, I wasn't entirely beyond redemption. But the peace I'd begun to savor was fragile, a butterfly’s wing against the coming storm.
It started with a hushed conversation I overheard near the temple gates, hushed voices laced with a fear that mirrored my own deepest anxieties. Elder Maeve’s sharp pronouncements cut through the murmur, her words like stones thrown into still water. “This place is for the faithful, Anna. Not for… *creatures*.” The word hung in the air, a venomous accusation. Anna’s soft reply, a plea for understanding, was drowned out by Maeve’s escalating pronouncements. I caught fragments, enough to know that someone had been asking questions. Someone was looking.
Later that day, Anna found me by the old oak, the one with the gnarled branches that seemed to embrace the sky. Her face, usually so serene, was etched with a concern that made my gut clench. “James,” she began, her voice barely a whisper, “there are rumors. Someone has been speaking with the villagers, asking about strangers, about those who… don’t belong.”
