The air within the temple walls, usually a balm to my frayed nerves, began to prickle with a new kind of tension. It was a subtle shift, like the first whisper of wind before a storm, and I felt it deep in my bones, a primal instinct that had served me well in my exile. Anna, bless her radiant soul, seemed oblivious at first, her focus entirely on the task at hand – tending to a wilting altar bloom with a gentleness that always made my chest ache.
"It needs more light," she murmured, her brow furrowed in concentration. "And a bit of water. The morning dew simply isn't enough for it this time of year."
I watched her, a knot tightening in my stomach. The peace I'd found here, fragile as a moth's wing, felt suddenly precarious. Elder Maeve. The name itself was a cold draft against my skin. I’d only seen her from a distance, a formidable figure draped in the temple’s deepest crimson robes, her silver hair pulled back in a severe bun. The whispers about her preceded her, tales of unwavering adherence to doctrine, of a heart as unyielding as the temple stones.
