The first rays of dawn painted the eastern sky in hues of rose and gold, chasing away the last vestiges of night. It was a gentle awakening, a stark contrast to the tempestuous nights we had weathered. Beside me, Anna stirred, her breath a soft whisper against my chest. I tightened my arm around her, the simple warmth of her presence a balm to wounds that ran deeper than any physical scar. Anna’s eyes fluttered open, and a sleepy smile graced her lips as she met my gaze. “Good morning,” she murmured, her voice still thick with sleep.
“Good morning, my love,” I replied, my voice rough with emotion. The word felt both foreign and utterly right on my tongue. Love. For so long, it had been a concept I’d only observed from a distance, a luxury I believed was denied to creatures like me. Yet, here it was, real and tangible, woven into the very fabric of my being.
