The scent of woodsmoke and damp earth clung to the air, a familiar comfort that wrapped around me like Anna’s arms. It had been weeks since Silas’s shadow had finally receded, weeks since Maeve, her stern face softened by a dawning understanding, had offered a hesitant blessing. Weeks since the whispers of fear that had once followed me like a second skin had begun to fade, replaced by something far more potent, far more precious: love.

Our cottage, nestled on the edge of the Whispering Woods, had become our haven. Anna had filled it with the cheerful clutter of her priestess life – woven baskets overflowing with herbs, smooth river stones polished by her touch, and the gentle scent of incense that always seemed to follow her. I, in turn, had brought my own kind of order. My rough-hewn furniture, crafted with hands more accustomed to claw than chisel, now sat comfortably beside her delicate creations. The wolf pelt I once wore as a shield, a constant reminder of my exile, now lay draped over the hearth, a symbol of a past I no longer feared.

Each morning, I’d wake to the soft light filtering through the linen curtains, and to Anna’s quiet presence beside me. Sometimes, she’d already be awake, her brow furrowed in concentration as she sketched designs for new temple tapestries, her charcoal smudging her fingers. Other times, I’d wake her, my rough hands gentle as I traced the curve of her cheek, her sleepy sigh a melody that melted the last vestiges of my inner turmoil.
