Chapter 18
Echoes of the Past
James begins to heal from his exile, his past wounds slowly closing. He finds strength in Anna's love and his own self-acceptance, no longer defined by his curse.
The air in the small cottage, once thick with the scent of drying herbs and Anna’s quiet prayers, now held a different kind of warmth. It was a warmth that seeped into my bones, chasing away the lingering chill of my exile. For so long, the scars of my past had been raw, festering wounds that no amount of solitude or wild freedom could truly heal. They were etched not just on my skin, but deep within my soul, a constant reminder of what I had lost, and what I was.
But here, with Anna’s gentle presence a constant balm, the edges of those old hurts began to soften. The gnawing ache of loneliness had been replaced by a quiet contentment, a feeling so foreign it had taken me weeks to recognize it. It wasn’t just the physical safety of this place, the sturdy walls and the locked door that kept the world’s judgment at bay. It was Anna. Her unwavering belief in me, her refusal to see me solely as the monster lurking beneath my skin, had been the key that unlocked something within me, something I thought was buried forever.
I watched her now as she knelt by the hearth, tending to a small pot of stew. The firelight danced in her auburn hair, casting a halo around her face as she hummed a soft, tuneless melody. There was a grace in her movements, a quiet strength that belied her delicate frame. She was the embodiment of the sanctuary she offered, a beacon of light in the darkness that had been my constant companion.
