The air in the temple courtyard still hummed with residual tension, a faint echo of the chaos that had nearly consumed us. Silas was gone, his brand of hatred extinguished, and Elder Maeve, her face etched with a weariness that went beyond her years, had finally seen the truth. The fear that had held her captive for so long had begun to recede, replaced by a flicker of understanding, a fragile bridge built from shared experience and undeniable evidence. It was a precarious thing, that understanding, but it was there. And within that quiet space, a new path began to unfurl before Anna and me.

We stood near the ancient fountain, its water a gentle murmur against the silence. The moonlight, so often a harbinger of my torment, now felt like a soft caress, a validation of the peace I was beginning to find. Anna’s hand rested lightly on my arm, a simple gesture that spoke volumes. Her warmth seeped into me, chasing away the last vestiges of the chill that had always clung to my soul.

“He’s gone, James,” she whispered, her voice a balm. “And Maeve… she understands.”
