The air thrummed with a power that had nothing to do with the approaching storm clouds. Tonight, the moon was a swollen pearl in the ink-black sky, its light spilling over the ancient stones of the temple grounds, painting everything in shades of silver and obsidian. It was the night of the full moon, the night I usually braced myself for the agony, the loss of control, the beast that clawed at my insides. But tonight felt different. Tonight, Anna was here.

She stood by the edge of the clearing, her white priestess robes a beacon against the encroaching darkness. Her presence was a balm, a quiet strength that seemed to push back the shadows, both outside and within me. We had sought refuge here, in this forgotten corner of the world, away from the prying eyes of those who would hunt me, away from the judgment that had hounded me for years. Anna, with her uncanny understanding and her unwavering kindness, had offered me not just shelter, but a fragile hope.

The familiar ache began to spread through my limbs, a tightening in my muscles, a prickling beneath my skin. It was a sensation I knew all too well, a prelude to the torment. I tensed, my jaw clenching, ready to retreat, to lock myself away from her, from the danger I represented. But Anna’s voice, soft as falling snow, reached me.
