A Choice of Two Worlds
James is offered a chance to rejoin his pack, but it means leaving Anna. He wrestles with his desire for belonging versus the love he's found, realizing his true home is with her.
The scent of pine and damp earth, once a balm, now felt like a cage. It was the scent of my past, a lifetime ago, a life before Anna. I stood at the edge of the Whispering Woods, the familiar, yet alien, embrace of my pack’s territory beckoning. Rhys, his muzzle greyed with age and wisdom, stood before me, his eyes, usually so full of understanding, now held a flicker of something I hadn’t seen in years: hope.
"James," he’d said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through my bones, "they have agreed. Your exile… it can be lifted. You can come home."
Home. The word had always tasted like ash in my mouth since I was cast out, a pariah for a crime I didn’t commit, for a nature I couldn’t control. But now, standing here, the words felt different. They felt like a gilded trap.
