Silas's Desperation

Cornered and furious, Silas escalates his attacks, using any means necessary to capture James. He becomes more reckless, his true motives starting to unravel.

The air in the low-lit room crackled with Silas’s frustration, a tangible thing that made the shadows writhe and dance around him. He paced the worn flagstones of his makeshift command center, the scent of stale sweat and desperation clinging to him like a second skin. Outside, the moon, a sliver of bone against the bruised twilight sky, offered no solace, only a stark reminder of his failure. James. The name was a venomous hiss on his tongue. He’d been so close, so agonizingly close, and yet the beast had slipped through his fingers, disappearing into the very woods he was supposed to have cleared.

“He’s gone, Silas,” a subordinate, a man named Kael with eyes as dead as a winter pond, reported, his voice flat. “We scoured the western ridge. Nothing. Not a trace.”

Silas slammed his fist against a rough-hewn table, the wood groaning in protest. “Nothing? How can there be *nothing*? He’s a wolf, Kael, not a phantom! He leaves a trail.” His voice was a low growl, laced with a fury that was beginning to fray at the edges of his control. The meticulous planning, the carefully laid traps, the hushed whispers of fear he’d sown through the surrounding villages – all of it seemed to be dissolving into mist.
