The air in the temple’s inner sanctum, usually thick with the scent of aged incense and hushed reverence, felt brittle, ready to shatter. Elder Maeve stood before us, her gnarled hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. Her eyes, usually sharp and unwavering, flickered with a tempest of emotions I couldn’t quite decipher – fear, yes, that was clear, but something else too, something akin to a trapped animal’s desperation. Anna stood beside me, her presence a steady anchor, her gaze fixed on Maeve with an intensity that mirrored the Elder’s own, though hers was born of compassion, not dread.

It had been a long night, a blur of hushed conversations and anxious pacing after Silas and his hunters had been driven back, their arrogance shattered by a display of power they hadn’t anticipated. They had come for me, their torches like angry eyes in the darkness, their shouts of ‘beast’ and ‘unclean’ echoing through the sacred grounds. And I, in a way I still struggled to comprehend, had met them. Not with the mindless fury they expected, but with a controlled strength, a primal roar that was as much a warning as a defense. Anna had been there, a shield of unwavering faith, her voice cutting through the panic, her belief in me a tangible force. It was that sight, I suspected, the undeniable evidence of my restraint and Anna’s steadfast loyalty, that had brought Maeve to this precipice.

“You… you did not lose control,” Maeve finally whispered, her voice cracking like dry leaves. It wasn’t an accusation, but a bewildered observation. Her gaze swept over me, lingering on the muscles that still coiled beneath my skin, the faint tremor that ran through me even now, a residual hum of the power I’d unleashed. “The ritual… it did not consume you.”
