The air in the forest was thick, not just with the damp earth and decaying leaves, but with a palpable tension that vibrated through my very bones. Moonlight, fractured by the dense canopy, painted shifting patterns on the gnarled roots and moss-covered stones. It was here, in this wild, untamed place, that the charade of Clara’s death had finally unraveled, revealing a truth far more horrifying than any grief could conjure.

She was a silhouette against the silver light, a creature of shadow and sinew, pacing back and forth with a restless energy that seemed to hum with primal power. The wolf. But it was Clara. The familiarity of her form, even in this monstrous iteration, was a cruel mockery. Her fur, the color of a stormy night, rippled over muscles that promised devastating strength. Her head was lowered, long snout sniffing the air, and with every twitch of her ears, every flick of her tail, I saw the echo of the woman I had loved.

My knees trembled, threatening to buckle. Fear, cold and sharp, lanced through me, but beneath it, a desperate, stubborn thread of love held fast. “Clara,” I whispered, the sound barely a breath against the rustling leaves. My voice cracked, raw with disuse and the sheer, suffocating weight of this reality. “Clara, it’s me. Peter.”
