Chapter 7
The Scent of Prey
Clara, in her new form, senses Peter. Her primal instincts scream 'food.' Yet, a flicker of recognition, of love, wars with the beast. He is her prey, but also her world. She slammed herself into a wall bashing in her head trying to snap out of it, she can't hurt Peter she still loves him
The air, once a comforting blanket woven with Clara’s familiar perfume and the faint, sweet scent of the lavender she favored, now carried something alien. Something sharp and wild that prickled the back of my throat. It was the smell of blood, of raw meat, of the hunt. And beneath it, a fainter, more disturbing undercurrent that made my own blood run cold: me.
I stumbled back, my hand instinctively going to the bandaged bite on my arm, a constant, throbbing reminder of the night that had fractured my world. The wolf, Clara, stood poised at the edge of the clearing, moonlight glinting off her impossibly sharp teeth. Her eyes, those familiar pools of emerald green that had once held so much warmth and love, now blazed with an infernal, predatory light. But as I watched, a flicker of something else, something agonizingly familiar, swam within their depths. A tremor ran through her massive frame, a guttural whine escaping her throat, a sound that was not entirely beast.
She was hungry. Terribly, undeniably hungry. And I, Peter, her beloved husband, was the only thing within her primal sight. The instinct to chase, to tear, to consume, warred with something deeper, something that had been etched into her very soul before the moon’s cruel magic had claimed her. I saw it then, a fleeting moment of clarity in the chaos of her monstrous form. A desperate struggle, a silent scream trapped behind bared fangs. She wanted to hunt me, yes, but she also wanted… me. The *me* she had loved. The *me* she had known.
