The moonlight, a cold, silver blade, sliced through the suffocating darkness of my living room. It painted the familiar furniture in alien hues, transforming my sanctuary into a stage for a horror I was only beginning to comprehend. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall, once a comforting rhythm, now sounded like the frantic pulse of a trapped animal, each second a hammer blow against my fraying sanity.
It had been a week. A week since Clara, my Clara, my breath, my world, had been stolen from me by a cruel, random twist of fate. A brain hemorrhage, the doctor had said. Swift, painless, unforgiving. I’d clung to that narrative like a drowning man to driftwood, the sheer finality of it a brutal balm to the agony of her absence. But the silence that followed her death was not the peaceful quiet of rest. It was a charged, expectant hush, pregnant with unseen threats.
The first sign had been the scent. A faint, musky odor that clung to the air in her absence, a scent I couldn't place, yet found disturbingly familiar. Then came the shadows, deeper and more restless than usual, dancing at the periphery of my vision, always just out of reach. I’d dismissed them as grief, the mind’s cruel trickery, conjuring phantoms from the wreckage of my life. But the unease festered, a persistent itch beneath my skin.
