The scent of her, a phantom perfume clinging to the stale air of our study, was the first betrayal. It was a cruel jest, a ghost of warmth in the icy grip of my grief. I’d spent days, weeks, lost in a haze of sorrow, the world bleached of color since Clara’s sudden departure. The doctors, Dr. Finch’s pronouncement of a swift, irreversible hemorrhage, had been a final, brutal punctuation mark. But now, a gnawing disquiet began to stir, a tiny ember of doubt in the ashes of my despair.

It started with the small things. A misplaced book, a favorite scarf draped over a chair she hadn’t used in months. Then, the journal. Tucked away in the back of her antique writing desk, beneath a false bottom I’d never known existed, lay Clara’s last testament. Her elegant script, usually so precise and controlled, was a frantic scrawl, each word a testament to a terror I couldn’t yet fathom.

*October 17th.* The entry was dated mere days before her ‘death.’ *The itching, it’s unbearable. Beneath my skin. Like a thousand tiny needles. I can’t sleep. I’m… changing.*
