Chapter 17
A New Dawn, A New Hunger
Peter survives, but is forever altered. The anger simmers, the transformation undeniable. He is a monster, forever bound to Clara, their love a haunting echo in the wilderness.
The dawn, when it finally broke, was a cruel mockery. It painted the sky in hues of bruised purple and sickly yellow, a palette that mirrored the landscape of my soul. The metallic tang of blood, thick and cloying, still coated my tongue. My body throbbed with an unfamiliar ache, a deep, resonant pain that spoke of broken bones and torn flesh, but also of something far more profound – a fundamental shift.
Clara. The name was a whisper on my lips, a phantom caress against the ragged edges of my memory. I remembered the raw power radiating from her, the terrifying grace of her movements as she stalked me through the moon-drenched woods. I remembered the searing pain as her teeth had sunk into my flesh, a violation that went beyond the physical.
And then, the choice. The impossible, agonizing choice. To fight, to survive, to embrace the monstrous reality that had consumed my perfect life. Or to surrender. To let the beast claim me, to become like her, lost in the primal urge. I had chosen to survive. I had chosen to fight. But the cost… the cost was immeasurable.
