The Mirror's Monster
Peter looks in the mirror. His eyes are changing, his features contorting. The reflection shows not Peter, but the beginnings of the creature he fears becoming.
The chipped porcelain of the sink was a familiar sight, a small imperfection in an otherwise pristine bathroom, a mirror of the one I’d shared with Clara. Now, it was just a sink, stained with the residue of frantic washes, attempts to scrub away the metallic tang that clung to my skin, to my very soul. I leaned closer to the mirror, my breath misting the glass, obscuring the man staring back. Or what used to be the man.
My reflection was a stranger, a distorted caricature of the life I’d known. The lines around my eyes, once etched by laughter and shared joys, now seemed to deepen into grim furrows, not of sorrow, but of a gnawing, primal ache. My jaw felt… tight. Uncomfortably so. I flexed it, the muscles protesting with a strange, unfamiliar tension. It wasn’t just the grief, though that was a constant, heavy cloak. This was something else, something insidious working from within.
The bite. The damn bite. It throbbed beneath the hastily bandaged gauze, a persistent ember that refused to be extinguished. Each pulse sent a jolt through my system, a whisper of something animalistic, something that prickled along my spine. I’d fought it, God, how I’d fought it. The fever had raged, a furnace that threatened to consume me from the inside out. I’d clawed at my own skin, desperate to rip out the poison, the wrongness that was taking root. But it had only burrowed deeper.
