A Guardian's Watch
Clara, now a wolf, paces. She watches Peter's struggle, torn between her hunger and a lingering affection. She waits, observing his painful metamorphosis.
The air in the study hung thick and cloying, a miasma of old paper, spilled ink, and something else… something primal and metallic that clung to the back of my throat. Outside, the moon, a swollen, jaundiced eye, peered through the skeletal branches of the oak, casting fractured shadows that writhed and danced like phantoms on the Persian rug. I sat slumped in my armchair, the worn leather cool against my feverish skin, the throbbing in my arm a relentless drumbeat against the silence.
She was out there. I could feel her, a palpable presence just beyond the closed door, a predator circling her prey. The memory of her eyes, no longer the soft hazel I’d adored, but glowing pools of molten gold, flashed behind my eyelids. Her snarling maw, a rictus of razor-sharp teeth, still echoed in the hollow chambers of my mind. Clara. My Clara. Gone, and yet… here.
The bite. It was a searing brand, a betrayal etched into my flesh. In the desperate, primal struggle that had consumed the last few hours, in the blinding terror and the crushing weight of her transformed fury, I had seen a flicker. A ghost of the woman I loved, trapped within the monstrous form. It was that flicker, that desperate, instinctive plea that had made me reach out, not to strike, but to… connect. And she had answered. Not with the ravenous hunger that had driven her to hunt me, but with a terrifying, instinctual act of… possession.
