It wasn't the fear of the labyrinth itself, not the gnawing apprehension of what hidden terror might lurk around the next bend. This was a more subtle, insidious dread, born from a dawning realization.

Beside her, a playful gust of wind, once so vibrant and full of life, now felt thin, like a sigh. Whisperwind, her constant companion, her mischievous guide through the fantastical whims of this place, was fading. Her laughter, once a cascade of tinkling bells, was now a dry rustle, like leaves skittering across a parched plain.

“Whisperwind?” Elara’s voice, usually laced with a touch of wonder when addressing the elemental, held a tremor of concern. She reached out, her hand passing through the spectral form as if it were nothing more than a heat haze. “Are you alright?”
