More powerful illusions manifest, blurring the lines. Is the bustling city real, or a trick? Is the quiet cottage a refuge, or a cage?
The air in the Labyrinth thickened, growing heavy with the scent of ozone and something akin to burnt sugar. Elara’s breath hitched, her heart a frantic bird against her ribs. The shimmering, shifting walls that had defined her journey thus far now solidified into something far more insidious. They were no longer simply walls, but windows, and through them, worlds bled into one another.
One moment, she stood on a path of phosphorescent moss, the next, the ground beneath her feet was rough cobblestone, slick with a recent rain. Towering stone buildings, so starkly different from the organic architecture of Eldoria, rose on either side, their windows dark and uninviting. The distant clang of a blacksmith’s hammer, the murmur of voices speaking in a language she almost, but not quite, understood, assaulted her senses. A city. A real city, or so it seemed.
Whisperwind, who had been flitting around Elara’s head like a playful, iridescent hummingbird, suddenly stilled. Her form flickered, her usual vibrant colors muted to a dull grey. “This… this is not right,” she whispered, her voice a rustle of dry leaves. “The air feels… heavy. Solid.”
