The tunnel narrowed, the walls pressing close like the ribs of some ancient beast. My lighter flickered, casting dancing shadows that seemed to move with a life of their own. Luca's hand was warm in mine, his palm calloused but steady. We moved in silence, the only sound the soft scuff of our shoes on damp stone and the distant drip of water.
"How far does this go?" I whispered, my voice swallowed by the darkness.
Luca shook his head. "I don't know. The Medici tunnels usually connect to the river, but this feels deeper."
