The air thrummed with a tension so thick it felt like a physical weight pressing down on the valley. Dust, kicked up by the nervous shuffling of a thousand feet, hung in the air, catching the harsh morning sun and turning it into a hazy, oppressive glare. Anya stood at the forefront of her small but determined army, her heart a wild bird beating against the cage of her ribs. Before them, stretching across the scarred plains leading to the ancient palace gates, was the formidable force of General Jian. Their banners, emblazoned with the coiled serpent of usurpation, flapped defiantly in the biting wind.
Beside her, Lady Sora’s hand rested lightly on her arm, a silent anchor. Sora’s eyes, usually alight with fierce determination, were shadowed with a grave concern, but her gaze never wavered from the enemy lines. Elder Kim, his face a roadmap of ancient wisdom, stood a few paces back, his presence a silent testament to the prophecies that had led them all to this place. Anya could feel his gaze, a steady warmth that bolstered her resolve.
“They outnumber us, Anya,” Sora murmured, her voice barely audible above the rising murmur of the assembled soldiers. “But we have the heart of the dragon.”
