The biting wind whipped Anya’s hair across her face, a cold, unwelcome caress that mirrored the chill in her heart. The marketplace, usually a vibrant tapestry of colors and sounds, felt muted, its usual boisterous energy subdued. A palpable tension hung in the air, thick and suffocating, like the smoke from a distant, smoldering fire. Yesterday, the raid had been swift, brutal, and devastating. The carefully gathered supplies, the precious medicinal herbs, the few worn but serviceable weapons – all gone, plundered by General Jian’s men. Worse, several of their own had been captured, their cries of defiance swallowed by the night.

Anya clenched her fists, her knuckles white. She could feel the raw anger simmering beneath her skin, a wild beast clawing to be set free. But Elder Kim’s steady gaze, even from across the bustling square, grounded her. He had taught her patience, the art of observing, of understanding the flow of the currents before diving into the treacherous waters.

“They were too well-informed,” Lady Sora said, her voice a low murmur as she joined Anya. Her usually immaculate silks were smudged with dust, her eyes shadowed with weariness, but her resolve remained unyielding. “This was no random sweep. They knew exactly where to strike.”
