The air in the hermit’s cave was thick with the scent of dried herbs and damp earth, a stark contrast to the acrid tang of blood and steel that had clung to me for so long. It was a quiet place, a sanctuary carved from the very heart of the mountain, and for the first time in what felt like an eternity, the clamor in my mind began to recede. I sat on a rough-hewn stool, the coarse wool of my tunic scratching at my still-tender wounds, and watched the hermit. His movements were slow, deliberate, each gesture imbued with a stillness I had never possessed. He stirred a pot over a low, steady flame, the gentle bubbling a soothing balm to my frayed nerves.

“You carry much, Sir Kaelan,” he said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate from the very stones of the cave. He didn’t look at me, his gaze fixed on the simmering broth, but I felt seen, truly seen, in a way that was both unnerving and profoundly comforting.

I wanted to deny it, to claim a lightness I hadn’t felt in years, but the words caught in my throat. The weight was a familiar burden, a cloak woven from a thousand unmet expectations and a million forgotten deeds. “I… I am weary,” I admitted, the confession a mere whisper.
