The biting wind whipped Kaelan’s tattered cloak around him, a meager defense against the gnawing cold that seemed to seep not just into his bones, but into the very marrow of his soul. Each gust carried with it the phantom echoes of cheers that never came, of praises that dissolved into the indifferent air before they could even form. The world, so vast and so full of people, felt like a hollow shell, echoing only with his own desperate pleas for notice. He’d walked for days, or perhaps weeks, the passage of time blurring into a monotonous ache. His armor, once a gleaming testament to his commitment, was now scarred and dented, each imperfection a silent accusation of deeds unacknowledged. Gareth’s absence was a constant, raw wound, a phantom limb that throbbed with a pain that no poultice could soothe. He’d carried that grief like a shroud, a heavy, suffocating blanket that pressed down on his chest, making each breath a conscious, painful effort.

He’d expected to find a quiet place to die, a forgotten corner of the world where his final moments would be as unnoticed as his life had been. But fate, it seemed, had a cruel sense of humor. He’d stumbled, quite literally, into a hidden ravine, a place so secluded that the wind seemed to hush its mournful song as it entered. And there, nestled amongst moss-covered rocks and ancient, gnarled trees, was a small dwelling, smoke curling lazily from a crude chimney. It was a place of profound stillness, a stark contrast to the turmoil raging within him. Hesitantly, driven by a primal instinct for shelter, he approached.

The door creaked open before he even reached it, revealing a figure that seemed sculpted from the very earth around him. An old man, his face a roadmap of wrinkles etched by time and a quiet wisdom, stood silhouetted against the dim interior. His eyes, though ancient, held a spark, a gentle curiosity that Kaelan hadn’t seen directed at him in years.
