The wind, a relentless sculptor, had long since carved away any softness from my features, leaving behind a stark, unyielding landscape. Each gust seemed to whisper the same refrain, a dirge of forgotten deeds and unacknowledged sacrifices. Duty, a heavy cloak woven from the threads of my own desperate yearning, had become my sole companion. It was a false comfort, I knew, a shroud that hid the gnawing emptiness within, but I clung to it nonetheless. The world, a vast, indifferent canvas, needed a hero, and I was determined to paint myself upon it, no matter the cost.

The rumors had reached the castle like a plague: a monstrous beast, a shadow of scale and fury, had descended upon the northern villages. It tore through livestock, its roars echoing the terror in the hearts of the villagers. The King, a man whose pronouncements were as fleeting as the morning mist, offered a reward, a glittering coin that felt like ash in my mind. It wasn't the gold I craved, but the hushed reverence, the whispered tales of my bravery that would surely follow.

Gareth, his brow furrowed with a familiar concern, stood beside me as I donned my armor. The polished steel, once a symbol of hope, now felt like a cage. "Another one, Kaelan?" he asked, his voice a low rumble. "These beasts, they seem to multiply with every victory you claim."
