The silence was a balm, a gentle hand stroking the raw edges of my soul. It had been weeks since I’d last donned my armor, weeks since the roar of the crowd, or more accurately, the rustle of indifferent conversation, had been the soundtrack to my life. I was no longer Sir Kaelan, the celebrated hero, the shield of the realm, or whatever grand titles they’d flung my way before they’d slipped from their tongues like water through a sieve. Now, I was simply Kaelan, a man tending a small plot of land gifted to me by the same kingdom I had bled for, a man learning the quiet language of the earth.

The hermit, wise old soul that he was, had guided me to this forgotten corner of the world, a place where the mountains sighed and the wind carried the scent of pine and damp soil. He’d shown me how to coax life from the ground, how to find a rhythm in the planting and weeding, the harvesting and resting. It was a far cry from the clang of steel and the desperate cries of battle, but in its own way, it was just as demanding, just as rewarding. Each tiny sprout that pushed through the soil felt like a personal victory, a testament to a different kind of strength, one that didn’t require the cheers of a thousand strangers.

My hands, once calloused from the grip of a sword hilt, were now softened by the touch of soil and the gentle sting of thorns. They were rough, yes, but in a way that felt earned, a testament to a labor of love, not of desperate need. I’d spend my mornings tilling the earth, my afternoons mending fences or carving small wooden figures—simple, unpretentious things that brought a quiet smile to my lips. I’d make a bird for the baker’s daughter, a sturdy little stool for the old woman who lived by the river, a wooden soldier for a boy whose eyes held a spark I remembered all too well.
