Chapter 12
Embracing the Quiet
Kaelan makes his decision. He turns away from the lure of glory, choosing instead a life of quiet service and self-discovery, embracing the hermit's profound wisdom.
The path ahead, once a glittering expanse of possibility, now felt like a winding trail through an ancient forest, dappled with sunlight and shadowed by towering trees. It was a path I had not sought, nor even truly imagined, but one that had emerged from the ruins of my former aspirations. The hermit’s words, like gentle rain on parched earth, had seeped into the cracks of my despair, nurturing a fragile seed of understanding. The grand quest, the thunderous applause, the fleeting smiles of a grateful kingdom – they all seemed to shimmer and fade like heat haze on a summer’s day, insubstantial and ultimately, empty.
I stood at the mouth of the hermit's cave, the rough-hewn stone cool beneath my hand. That day, the day I had saved them all, had also been the day I lost the only person who had ever truly seen me. And in the deafening silence that followed, the cheers of the saved had been a hollow mockery.
The hermit, his face a roadmap of time and contemplation, emerged from the shadows of his dwelling. His eyes, the color of a twilight sky, held a quiet knowing that both unsettled and soothed me. He didn't speak, only offered a small, almost imperceptible nod, as if he had been waiting for this very moment, this very decision.
