Kaelan contemplates the final quest. He remembers the hollowness of past accolades and the crushing weight of rejection, weighing it against the peace the hermit offers.
The air in the hermit’s cave had a way of settling into your bones, a quiet, earthy scent that spoke of time and patience. It was a stark contrast to the clang of steel and the roar of crowds, a silence that had begun to seep into me, filling the hollow spaces where anticipation and yearning used to reside. Today, though, the silence felt heavier, thicker, as if it were burdened with the weight of a decision I had to make. The hermit, his eyes like ancient pools reflecting the flickering firelight, had presented it to me plainly, without the fanfare or persuasive words I’d grown accustomed to in my old life.
“One path leads to the ephemeral roar of the world,” he’d said, his voice a dry rustle of leaves. “The other, to the quiet song of your own soul.”
I sat by the entrance of his humble dwelling, the morning sun painting streaks of gold across the rough-hewn rocks. My armor, still bearing the faint scent of the campfire and the lingering chill of the night, lay beside me, a familiar weight that now felt strangely foreign. It was the armor I had worn into countless battles, the shield I had raised against countless foes, the very symbol of the identity I had so desperately forged. But now, it felt like a gilded cage.
