Chapter 23
Episode 23
The airlock on the lower bay of the Pocket hissed as it equalized, venting a cloud of sterile steam into the hangar. One by one, the survival pods clicked open. Medical droids instantly hovered in, scanning the thirty-two rescued researchers from Station Theta-X. Most were shivering, wrapped in silver thermal blankets, their faces pale and hollowed by the trauma of having their very existence dragged to the brink of nothingness. Aqua was already there, using her hydro-kinetic abilities to soothe their heightened nervous systems, offering warm cups of nutrient tea. At the head of the group stood Dr. Aris Thorne, the station’s Chief Interdimensional Physicist. His lab coat was scorched, and his hands shook violently as he accepted a mug from Aqua, but his eyes—sharp, dark, and hyper-focused—were wide with a mix of awe and terror. Shift stepped forward, his obsidian armor receding back into his collar, revealing Malik’s tired but stern face. Blackman stood beside him like a granite wall, while Kareem held a floating holographic tablet, ready to record every detail. “Dr. Thorne,” Malik said softly, keeping his voice calm to avoid startling the man. “I’m Malik. You and your crew are safe aboard our ship. The threat in the Kepler system has been neutralized.” Thorne looked up, his gaze locking onto Malik. He didn't look relieved; he looked horrified. He stared directly at Malik’s chest, right where Echo’s core rested beneath his skin. “Neutralized?” Thorne choked out, his voice a raspy whisper. “You didn't neutralize it... you contained it. I saw what you did through the Pod’s telemetry. You took it inside you.” “It’s how we saved your life,” Venom Boy chimed in, leaning against a nearby bulkhead, crossing his arms. “A little gratitude wouldn't hurt, Doc.” “You don't understand!” Thorne insisted, stepping forward, his blanket slipping from his shoulders. He grabbed Malik by the forearm—his grip surprisingly tight for a man who had just been unwritten. “We weren't just mapping spatial anomalies near Kepler-186. We were tracking a signal. A frequency broadcast from outside the known multiversal web.” Kareem tapped his tablet, pulling up the scrubbed telemetry data from Theta-X before its destruction. “A signal? Our scanners only picked up raw null-energy when we arrived.” “Because the signal is the null-energy,” Thorne said, looking around at the gathered team. “We called it Project Genesis-Zero. For six months, Theta-X was picking up pulses from an ancient superstructure sitting in the dark space between dimensions. We thought it was a dead artifact... a remnant from the big bang.” “The Forge,” Malik murmured, remembering the visions Echo had channeled. Thorne froze, his face losing what little color it had left. “You... you know the name?” “I saw it,” Malik said quietly. “When I touched the crystal. I saw beings building it, using it to erase failed reality drafts.” “It wasn't dead,” Thorne whispered, his voice trembling. “We tried to send a probe to sample its hull. The moment our beam touched the structure, it didn't just attack us—it woke up. It identified Theta-X as an 'unauthorized variance' and sent that crystal lens to erase our entire sector from the timeline.” Blackman stepped closer, his deep voice cutting through the quiet bay. “If that station is an automated eraser... who turned it on? And why now?” Thorne looked up at Blackman, then back at Malik, his eyes filled with grim certainty. “It turned on because the Void was destroyed,” Thorne said. “The Void wasn't just a monster wandering the multiverse. It was a containment seal—a governor built to keep the Forge dormant. When you defeated the Void, you broke the lock. The multiverse is no longer being governed... so the Forge is resetting the clock.” A heavy silence fell over the hangar bay. Kareem lowered his tablet, staring at the data in shock. Aqua paused, her hands hovering over a cup of tea. Echo stirred deep within Malik's chest, the newly absorbed glyphs burning with a faint, pulsing heat. The Void wasn't the ultimate evil they had fought. It was the padlock on something infinitely worse.
