A Father's Promise

The battlefield was a canvas of ruin. What had been a city, a vibrant tapestry of steel and glass, was now a cratered expanse, a monument to a battle fought and won. Shift, or rather, Malik, knelt at the epicenter, his armor flaking away like dead skin, revealing the bruised and battered body beneath. Echo, his symbiote, pulsed weakly, its once vibrant blue light now a flickering ember.

Kareem was the first to reach him, his own exo-suit scuffed but functional. He offered a hand, his expression a mixture of relief and exhaustion. “You good?”

Malik took the offered hand, his grip surprisingly firm. He managed a weak smile, the kind that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Never better.”
