Chapter 9
A Shadowy Lead
Sir Kael follows a faint trail, piecing together fragmented rumors. His investigation leads him away from the castle, towards the wilder, less-traveled parts of Eldoria.
Sir Kael adjusted the worn leather of his gauntlet, the cool morning air a welcome contrast to the stifling atmosphere of the castle. The whispers, the very things that had driven the King into his spiraling paranoia, were like faint, disembodied voices in his own mind, a constant, unsettling hum. He’d spent weeks sifting through the King’s pronouncements, the terrified murmurs of courtiers, and the hushed anxieties of the common folk. It was a tangled mess, a tapestry woven with threads of fear and misunderstanding. But somewhere within it, Kael felt, lay a single, solid strand that, if pulled, might unravel the whole dreadful knot.
The King’s advisors, Lord Valerius and Lady Isolde, had been little help. Their pronouncements were steeped in protocol and veiled accusations, their eyes darting nervously towards the King’s chambers as if expecting a spectral accusation to leap from the stone walls. They spoke of treason, of plots hatched in shadowed alcoves, of a kingdom rotting from within. Kael listened, nodded, and filed away their words alongside the baker’s worried frown, the stable boy’s wide-eyed tale of strange lights in the forest, and the laundress’s insistence that the very laundry seemed to carry the scent of betrayal.
His lead, if one could call it that, was a whisper about a “shadowy figure” seen near the old Whispering Woods, a place most villagers avoided after sundown. It was vague, easily dismissed as folklore or a trick of the light. But Kael had also heard a garbled account from a frightened trapper, a man usually as sturdy as an oak, who spoke of odd, chittering sounds and a fleeting glimpse of something small and quick darting between the ancient trees. The trapper, his face pale and etched with fear, had described the creature as having “eyes like polished obsidian and a grin that could curdle milk.” It was a description that snagged in Kael’s mind, a tiny burr on the smooth fabric of his logic.
