King Theron paced the length of his grand hall, his shadow a long, distorted figure against the tapestries depicting Eldoria’s glorious past. Each step echoed the frantic beat of his heart, a drum of suspicion that had replaced the steady rhythm of his former reign. The whispers, once faint murmurs at the edge of hearing, now seemed to slither through the very stones of the castle, coiling around his thoughts like venomous serpents. They spoke of betrayal, of plots hatched in secret chambers, of daggers aimed at his back. He saw betrayal in the way his advisors bowed, in the way the guards stood at attention. Their loyalty, once a comforting cloak, now felt like a flimsy disguise.

“More guards,” he commanded, his voice hoarse, to no one in particular. “Double the patrols. And seal the western gate. No one in, no one out, without my personal seal.”

A hushed silence followed, broken only by the rustle of his velvet robes. His advisors, a collection of greybeards and earnest young men, stood frozen, their faces a mixture of bewilderment and concern. They had tried to reason with him, to explain that the kingdom was at peace, that the harvest was bountiful, that the people adored him. But their words were like pebbles against the fortress of his fear.
