Chapter 18
The King's Remorse
Theron is overwhelmed by shame and regret. He sees the damage his paranoia has wrought and acknowledges his grave error, his heart heavy with the realization of his folly.
King Theron stood at the grand window of his solar, the once-familiar tapestry of Eldoria spread out below him. But today, the vibrant greens of the forests and the cheerful blues of the rivers seemed muted, dulled by the heavy shroud of his own making. The whispers, the insidious, chilling whispers he had once believed were the very breath of treason, now echoed in his mind not with terror, but with a profound, gut-wrenching shame. He saw the anxious faces of his advisors, their earnest pleas dismissed as cunning deception. He remembered the fear in the eyes of his subjects, their laughter silenced by his increasingly harsh decrees. He saw, with a clarity that was both devastating and liberating, the ruin he had wrought.
A single tear traced a path down his cheek, hot and stinging. It wasn’t a tear of sadness, but of a deep, gnawing remorse. He had been a benevolent king, a king who loved his people, a king who fostered joy and prosperity. And in his fear, in his suspicion, he had become a tyrant, a shadow of the man he once was. The gilded cage he had retreated into, meant to protect him, had instead become a prison of his own making, and the bars were forged from his own mistrust.
He turned from the window, his gaze falling upon the intricately carved wooden bird that sat on his desk. It was a gift from a young village girl, a child he had once promised a brighter future for. He remembered her bright, trusting eyes, so different from the fear he had instilled in so many. He picked up the bird, its smooth surface cool against his trembling fingers. This small, innocent object was a reminder of the goodness he had lost, the goodness he had trampled underfoot.
