King Theron sat upon his throne, though it felt less like a seat of power and more like a prickly perch. The great hall, once filled with the cheerful clatter of courtiers and the scent of roasted meats, was now hushed, save for the frantic beat of his own heart. Every shadow seemed to writhe with unseen eyes, every gust of wind whistling through the battlements a conspirator’s hiss. Sir Kael stood before him, his armor gleaming dully in the scant light filtering through the stained-glass windows, his face a mask of earnestness.

“Your Majesty,” Kael began, his voice steady, though a tremor ran through Theron’s very bones at the sound. “I have discovered the source of the whispers. It is not a grand conspiracy, nor a hidden legion plotting your downfall.”

Theron leaned forward, his eyes narrowed. “And what is this ‘source,’ Sir Kael? Speak plainly, lest you too be swept up in their deceit.” His voice was hoarse, unused to such direct address.
