Chapter 13
A Knight's Plea
Kael returns to the castle, armed with the truth. He faces the daunting task of convincing a deeply paranoid King Theron that his fears are unfounded and fueled by a simple trickster.
Sir Kael dismounted his steed, the loyal destrier, Shadow, snorting softly as he patted its flank. The grand gates of Eldoria Castle loomed before him, their ironwork, usually gleaming with the pride of a prosperous kingdom, now seemed to cast long, ominous shadows. He clutched the small, intricately carved wooden bird in his hand, the proof of his extraordinary journey. Gribble, the mischievous goblin, had confessed his trickery, his cackles echoing in the damp, mossy cavern, and had even, with a surprisingly remorseful shrug, handed over this trinket as a peace offering. King Theron, once the heart of their kingdom, was now its most anxious prisoner, locked away in his own gilded cage, convinced of a thousand unseen enemies.
“Halt!” a gruff voice commanded, and Kael’s hand instinctively went to the hilt of his sword, a practiced reflex honed by years of training. But it was just Captain Borin, his face etched with worry lines that seemed to deepen with each passing day.
