Chapter 10
The Goblin's Lair
Kael discovers Gribble's hidden dwelling. He observes the goblin's chaotic merriment, beginning to suspect that the grand conspiracy might be far less sinister than imagined.
Sir Kael’s boots crunched on the dry leaves, the sound unnervingly loud in the hushed forest. The air grew thick with the scent of damp earth and something faintly acrid, like burnt sugar. He’d followed the faintest of trails, a scattering of iridescent beetle wings, a trail of pebbles arranged in nonsensical patterns, and the lingering echo of a cackle that seemed to snag on the branches. His heart thumped a steady rhythm against his ribs, a drumbeat of determination. He was close. He could feel it.
The trees pressed in, their branches gnarled like ancient fingers, casting long, dancing shadows that played tricks on his eyes. He’d heard the whispers, of course. Everyone in Eldoria had. They slithered through the marketplace, coiled around the palace halls, and even, it seemed, rustled in the very leaves above his head. Whispers of betrayal, of plots, of a kingdom crumbling from within. King Theron, once the heartiest of laughter, now recoiled from them, his eyes wide and darting, his mind a fortress under siege. Sir Kael, tasked with protecting the realm, felt the weight of those whispers as keenly as any blade.
He rounded a particularly ancient oak, its bark scarred with time, and stopped dead. Before him, nestled in a hollow beneath a tangle of roots, was a burrow. It wasn’t a neat, animalistic den, but a haphazard collection of scavenged treasures. A chipped porcelain teacup sat precariously beside a pile of shiny buttons. A tattered velvet slipper dangled from a low-hanging branch, swaying gently. And from within, a sound that made Sir Kael’s brow furrow. It was a giggle, high-pitched and gleeful, followed by a series of snorts and a distinctly goblin-like chortle.
