The scent of woodsmoke and desperation hung heavy in the air, a familiar perfume to Robby, though he’d hoped to leave it behind like a discarded cloak. He’d found refuge in the shadowed valleys of the Whisperwind Peaks, a place where the wind itself seemed to murmur secrets of ages past. It was here, amidst the stoic pines and craggy outcrops, that the echoes of Emmatos’s tyranny had finally caught up to him. Not with the clang of steel or the roar of armies, but with the hushed pleas of the downtrodden.

He’d been tracking a wounded stag, its leg gored by a hunter’s trap, when he’d stumbled upon the ravaged remnants of a small village. Homes, once sturdy and warm, were now splintered husks, their contents scattered like fallen leaves. A chilling silence had replaced the usual hum of village life, broken only by the mournful cries of a single, abandoned child. Robby’s heart, a thing he’d long tried to keep encased in indifference, ached. He knelt, his large hands surprisingly gentle as he scooped the crying infant into his arms. The child, no older than a few months, clung to him, its sobs slowly subsiding.

It was then that he saw them. Figures emerging from the skeletal remains of the village, their faces etched with a weariness that went beyond mere physical exhaustion. They were gaunt, their clothing tattered, but their eyes… their eyes held a flicker of defiance, a stubborn ember refusing to be extinguished. A woman, her hair streaked with grey, stepped forward, her gaze falling upon Robby and the child.
