The crisp autumn air, usually a balm to Robby’s soul, now felt sharp and biting, carrying with it the scent of fear. He sat by the hearth, the meager flame casting dancing shadows that did little to dispel the encroaching darkness in his heart. The village, once a haven of quietude, was now a stage for Emmatos’s cruel theatre. Whispers, no longer hushed with reverence but laced with terror, had reached him: the King’s men, clad in the obsidian armor that marked Emmatos’s legions, had swept through the neighboring hamlets. They hadn’t come to conquer, not in the traditional sense. They had come to collect. Children, their laughter silenced, their eyes wide with confusion and dawning horror, had been herded into cages. Mothers, their pleas dissolving into guttural sobs, had been torn from their families.

He had sought anonymity, a chance to simply *be*, unburdened by the weight of a crown forged in fire and blood. But peace, he was learning, was not a passive state. It was a battle, fought not just with swords and sorcery, but with conscience.
