The air in the abandoned server room hummed with a low, persistent thrum, a sound that Alex had come to associate with the edge of reality fraying. Dust motes danced in the single beam of light piercing the gloom from a cracked ceiling panel, illuminating a scene of technological decay. Racks of defunct servers stood like silent sentinels, their blinking lights long extinguished, a graveyard of forgotten data. It was here, amidst the ghosts of the digital past, that vanlamb had agreed to meet him.

Alex, or OP2F63 as he was known in Aetheria, shifted his weight, the worn soles of his sneakers squeaking softly on the grimy concrete. He’d expected a confrontation, perhaps another tense standoff like those they’d had in the virtual arena. But vanlamb, when they finally emerged from the deeper shadows, seemed less like a rival and more like a phantom. Their form was indistinct, cloaked in the dim light, and their voice, when it finally spoke, was a whisper that seemed to slither through the silence.

“You came, OP2F63,” vanlamb said, their tone devoid of any emotion Alex could decipher.
