The hum of the refrigerator was a dull throb in Alex’s ears, a sound so ordinary it felt alien. He blinked, the fluorescent kitchen light harsh against his eyes. Just moments ago, he’d been soaring through the crystalline spires of Aetheria, the wind whipping past his avatar’s face, the cheers of a thousand virtual spectators a symphony in his ears. Now, it was just… this. The chipped Formica countertop, the faint smell of yesterday’s toast, the gnawing unease that had settled deep in his gut.

He ran a hand over his face, the texture of his own skin rough and unfamiliar. OP2F63 felt more real than Alex. The effortless grace, the sharp reflexes, the absolute certainty of command – that was OP2F63. Alex, on the other hand, was prone to tripping over his own feet and second-guessing every decision. But OP2F63 was just a construct, wasn’t he? A collection of code and algorithms that had learned to mimic human brilliance. Or was it the other way around?

The thought sent a shiver down his spine, a chill that had nothing to do with the slightly-too-cold air conditioning. He’d seen the glitches, felt them. A bird freezing mid-flight, a car appearing and disappearing on the street, the unnerving sensation of his own thoughts momentarily lagging, as if the connection to his brain had been interrupted. And the whispers… the whispers that were no longer confined to the game’s chat logs, but seemed to echo in the quiet corners of his apartment.
