The air in my dream was thick, not with the usual musty scent of forgotten attics, but with something metallic and sharp, like ozone after a lightning strike. The landscape around me was a kaleidoscope of fractured images – a crumbling tower, a whispering forest, a city of glass that shimmered and then dissolved. And in the center of it all, a figure. It was the same one, cloaked and hooded, its face a permanent shadow, but tonight, the silence that usually clung to it was broken.

“Destiny,” a voice rasped, dry as autumn leaves skittering across pavement. It wasn't spoken aloud, not in the way I understood speaking, but it resonated within my skull, a thought that wasn't my own. “And choice.”

I tried to form a question, but my dream-mouth felt heavy, unresponsive. The key, the one I’d found tucked beneath my pillow, pulsed in my pocket, a faint warmth against my thigh. It felt heavier tonight, more significant. I’d spent the last few days turning it over and over in my hands, tracing the intricate, alien patterns etched into its surface. It was cool to the touch, a solid weight of brass or some other metal I couldn't name, but in the dream, it seemed to hum with a latent energy.
