The dreams had always been vivid, a kaleidoscope of impossible landscapes and sensations that left me breathless even after waking. But lately, they’d taken on a new texture, a sharpened edge that prickled my skin and made the familiar comfort of my bedroom feel suddenly thin. It was in one of these intensified nights, a night where the moonlight bled through my window in streaks of liquid silver, that I saw it. Or rather, *them*.

At first, it was just a shape in the periphery, a smudge against the impossible, star-dusted sky of my dreamscape. I was standing on a precipice overlooking a city that pulsed with an inner light, its architecture defying gravity. The air hummed with an energy I could almost taste. Then, the smudge resolved, coalescing into a figure cloaked in shadows so deep they seemed to absorb the very light around them. They stood utterly still, a sentinel against the vibrant chaos of the dream.

My heart, even in the dream, thudded with a mixture of fear and a strange, compelling curiosity. I took a tentative step forward, the ground beneath me strangely yielding, like walking on compressed velvet. "Who are you?" I managed to ask, my voice sounding distant, as if it belonged to someone else.
