For days, it had been a constant companion, a cold, intricate puzzle piece I’d found amidst the mundane clutter of my room. But tonight, as I lay in bed, the familiar ache of unanswered questions pressing down on me, the key felt different. It pulsed, a faint warmth spreading from the metal, a silent invitation.

I’d spent hours tracing its swirling patterns, the tiny, almost invisible etchings that seemed to shift and rearrange themselves when I wasn’t looking. My parents, bless their oblivious hearts, had dismissed it as a fancy trinket, an antique I’d somehow unearthed. But they didn’t feel the thrum. They didn’t see the way the shadows in my room seemed to deepen and twist around it, as if acknowledging its presence.

The dreams, too, had intensified. The shadowy figure, the one who spoke in riddles and flickered at the edges of my vision, was no longer just a fleeting specter. It lingered, its form solidifying just enough to convey a sense of urgency, a palpable fear that wasn’t entirely my own.
