The air in my room felt thick, heavy with the unspoken question that had settled over me like a shroud. It wasn't just the lingering scent of yesterday's rain, or the faint hum of the old radiator fighting the encroaching chill of autumn. It was the weight of the key, cool and solid in my pocket, a constant reminder of the impossible. My dreams. They weren't just dreams anymore, were they? They were… something else. A place I could touch, a place that felt more real than the worn carpet beneath my feet.

I traced the outline of the key through the fabric of my jeans, its intricate carvings a familiar, unsettling pattern against my fingertips. Each turn of its teeth, each flourish of its bow, seemed to whisper secrets I couldn't quite decipher. The dreams themselves were a labyrinth, a twisting maze of familiar streets that melted into alien landscapes, of faces I knew contorted into expressions of warning or beckoning. Mom, always more attuned to the subtle shifts in my mood, had simply offered a warm smile and a promise of hot chocolate, a ritual of comfort that usually smoothed the rough edges of my worries. But this was different. This wasn't a scraped knee or a forgotten homework assignment. This was a fundamental unraveling of what I thought I knew.
